What Is Plex and How Does It Work? – Review Geek

Plex, Paket/Shutterstock.com

Plex allows you to build a personal streaming service using your own content. Most people buy dedicated hardware for Plex, but you can test it using your desktop or laptop without spending a dime.

The days of cheap streaming are long gone. Services like Netflix are prohibitively expensive and offer much smaller libraries than they did just a few years ago. A personal collection of DVDs and Blu-Ray discs can alleviate this problem, but if you want to stream the media you own, you need a service like Plex.

At a glance, Plex can seem very complicated and confusing. Its a very unique service, and unlike Netflix or Hulu, it requires a bit of setup and patience.

But the general idea behind Plex is very straightforward; it lets you stream your personal media to any phone, computer, or smart TV. You provide the files, and Plex automatically organizes everything into a clean and easy-to-use interface. Its like building your own streaming service for movies, TV shows, and music. (You can even add unique categories to Plex, like a collection of concert videos, family videos, or sports recordings.)

Plex even offers some advanced features, such as the ability to stream and record antenna TV. And its highly customizable if youre willing to put in the work. Of course, the big selling point is that you can stream Plex from anywhereyou can even share it with friends or family outside your home. (Though some of these features require Plex Pass, which well discuss later.)

I should also mention playlists, which might be my favorite Plex feature. You can throw movies or shows into custom playlists to shuffle them randomly or play them in a specific order. For example, you might make a playlist ofBuffy the Vampire Slayer andAngel, which aired back-to-back and often had overarching plot points or references.

In order to use Plex, you need to set up a Plex Media Server. This is a device that runs the Plex software, handles all your files, and processes video for streaming. You can use the computer that you already own as a Plex Media Server, though I suggest buying a dedicated device that can stay online 24/7, such as an NVIDIA Shield TV Pro, a NAS device, or a small Intel NUC computer.

You dont need to be a rocket scientist to put together a Plex Media Server. The Plex software guides you through this process, and if you follow the instructions correctly, you wont run into any problems. (When people have problems with Plex, its usually a matter ofpoor file organization. Even the most inexperienced computer users can avoid this problem by patiently reading the instructions.)

While Plex is best known for its personal media streaming capabilities, its also an all-in-one platform for your streaming needs. The Plex Discover feature, which was introduced in 2022, allows you to search for content across all streaming service platforms. It can also find specific information about cast and crew, such as the full list of Gene Wilders film credits.

Additionally, Plexprovides a ton of free on-demand content and live TV channels. This ad-supported content is similar to what youll find on Pluto TV or Tubi, but its integrated directly into the Plex app (in a dedicated tab and on your Plex home page.)And yes, you can stream this free content without setting up a Plex Media Server.

Note that these additional features exist tosupplement the Plex experience. Most people treat Plex as a personal streaming service and rarely touch Discover or the free Movies & Shows. If you want to disable these features, you can.

By default, Plex is a free service. The mobile app costs a few dollars, but if you only plan to stream on computers and smart TVs, you can set everything up without spending a dime. This makes it very easy to test Plex. But if you stick with this service, you will eventually sign up for Plex Pass.

A Plex Pass subscription only costs $5 a month, and lifetime memberships regularly go on sale for around $90. That may seem like a lot of money to spend on Plex (after all, youre streaming stuff you already own). But the perks included with Plex Pass are just too goodits absolutely worth the price.

Here are some of my favorite Plex Pass features:

Clearly, Plex Pass is a necessity for anyone who wants to stream Plex outside their home. But it also improves the overall Plex experience. Im not sure how I could live without the ability to skip intros, stream antenna TV, and use the Plexamp music player.

You can learn more about Plex Pass at the Plex website. Note that Ive only listed my favorite Plex Pass featuresthis subscription unlocks plenty more!

Setting up a Plex Media Server can be a daunting task. But as I mentioned earlier, if you follow the instructions, you shouldnt run into any problems. The Plex Media Server software will try to guide you through setup, though you can find a ton of additional resources at the Plex website.

Now, theres no point in rewriting Plexsdetailed installation instructions. But I will give you a gist of what you need (and what you can expect) when setting up a Plex Media Server. Im going to approach this from a beginners perspective, because I want you to test Plex for free before you spend a bunch of money on this stuff.

The above steps will help you test Plex without spending any money on hardware. That said, hardcore Plex users tend to have much more elaborate setups. If you find that you enjoy Plex, I strongly suggest buying an NVIDIA Shield TV Pro or a NAS device for use as your media server. Both options consume very little power and are fairly compact.

And at some point, youll need hard drives to store your growing Plex media library. I suggest buying hard drives that are specifically made for NAS devices, as theyll last a lot longer than typical hard drives. (If youre tempted to use an SSD in your Plex server, dont bother. You wont see any major benefit.)

To be clear, this stuff can get expensive if youre obsessive. But a simple and cheap Plex Media Server might be all you need. Lets say you buy a two-bay NAS device and a 4TB NAS HDDthatll set you back about $250, but youll have enough storage to hold hundreds of movies, TV shows, and albums. Do a bit of math, and $250 is what you might pay for 10 months of Netflix Basic and ad-free Hulu. Plex pays for itself!

UBISOFT STRENGTHENS STRATEGIC FOCUSON BIGGEST BRANDS AND LIVE SERVICES WITH A NEW SET OF MEASURES, CEMENTING LONG-TERM GROWTH AND VALUE CREATION PROSPECTS

2022-23 financial targets updated, introduction of targets for 2023-24

Download the press release

Paris, January 11, 2023 Ubisoft strengthens strategic focus on biggest brands with a new set of measures, cementing long-term growth and value creation prospects. The Company updates today its 2022-23 financial targets and introduces 2023-24 targets.

Over the past 10 years, Ubisoft teams have organically created one of the deepest and most diversified portfolios of owned IPs in the industry. This has resulted in a significant transformation of the Group, the development of multiple major brands and much stronger recurring revenues thanks to highly successful Live Service games.

Despite these achievements, the Company is facing major challenges as the industry continues to shift towards mega-brands and long-lasting titles than can reach players across the globe, across platforms and business models. Our strategy over the past 4 years has been about building long-lasting live games and adapting our strongest franchises, mainly Assassins Creed, Far Cry, Tom Clancys Ghost Recon, Tom Clancys Rainbow Six and Tom Clancys The Division, to these converging trends to make them truly global brands. However, the games from this investment phase have yet to be released, while our recent launches have not performed as well as expected. Compounding this effect, in the context of worsening macroeconomic conditions, the trends over the Holiday season, in particular the last weeks of December and beginning of January, have been markedly and surprisingly slower than expected.

This overall context has triggered a full review of our revenue prospects leading to increased cautiousness over the coming years. Considering this, combined with the significant additional investments that resulted from lockdown and new working patterns that have had a profound impact on productions across the industry over the past 3 years, Ubisoft is announcing today a set of measures dedicated to strengthening its long-term growth and value-creation prospects:

Story continues

Ensure all our energy is focused on building our brands and live services into some of the most powerful within the industry. As a consequence, we have decided to cancel three unannounced projects, on top of the four already announced in July 2022.

Depreciate around 500m of capitalized R&D, concerning upcoming premium and Free-to-Play games and the newly cancelled titles. This notably reflects the increased cautiousness related to the current challenging videogame market and macroeconomic environment as well as the necessary increased focus on fewer titles.

As part of our increased strategic focus, adapt our organization to a more challenging market, with an expected net reduction of our non-variable costs base of more than 200m over the next 2 years. This will be achieved through targeted restructuring, divesting some non-core assets and usual natural attrition. Ubisoft will continue to look at hiring highly talented people for its biggest brands and live services.

Yves Guillemot, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, said We are clearly disappointed by our recent performance. We are facing contrasted market dynamics as the industry continues to shift towards mega-brands and everlasting live games, in the context of worsening economic conditions affecting consumer spending. Despite excellent ratings and players reception as well as an ambitious marketing plan, we were surprised by Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope underperformance in the final weeks of 2022 and early January. Just Dance 2023 underperformed as well. Therefore, with the approval of the Board of Directors, we are taking additional important strategic and operational decisions today. It is key to continue adapting our organization, to further strengthen our execution and to ensure we both deliver amazing games to players as well as great value creation.

The industrys long-term prospects remain promising, and I am convinced Ubisoft is well positioned to benefit from this momentum thanks to the strength of our teams, brands, production capacity, technology and balance-sheet. Our back-catalogue remains very healthy with notably robust activity on Rainbow Six Siege, great momentum for our Assassins Creed games, and generally solid performance from our live games. We expect our strategy to build long-lasting live games and transform our biggest brands into truly global phenomenon with multiple offerings across platforms and business models, to ultimately generate significant value creation, with strong topline and operating income growth over the coming years."

Updated Financial TargetsToday, Ubisoft is revising its Q3 2022-23 net bookings target, now expected at approximately 725m versus the prior target of approximately 830m. This reflects the more challenging environment mentioned previously, which notably resulted in the lower-than-expected performance of Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and Just Dance 2023.

Players will be able to discover the beauty of Skull and Bones in the upcoming beta phase. The additional time has already paid off and brought impressive improvements to its quality, which has been confirmed by recent playtests. We believe players will be positively surprised by its evolution. We have decided to postpone its release in order to have more time to showcase a much more polished and balanced experience and to build awareness. Skull and Bones will now be released early 2023-24.

All this considered, Ubisoft is revising its full year targets with net bookings expected to be down more than 10% year-on-year versus a prior expectation of up more than 10%. Non-IFRS operating income, reflecting lower net bookings, the postponement of Skull and Bones and the depreciation of capitalized R&D for around 500m, is now expected at -500m versus 400m previously.

Ubisoft is introducing today its 2023-24 non-IFRS operating income target at around 400m reflecting necessary prudence in the current challenging environment, while still expecting an overall strong topline growth thanks to a materially stronger line-up.

Ubisoft balance sheet is strong with around 1.5 billion in cash and cash equivalents after reimbursing the 500m bond expiring at the end of this month.

Frdric Duguet, Chief Financial Officer, said Our decisive reaction and our additional cost optimization measures should help us navigate the current challenging economic environment and ensure a leaner organization for the years to come. Leveraging the biggest pipeline of games in the Ubisofts history, 2023-24 will see the releases of Assassins Creed Mirage, Avatar: Frontiers of PandoraTM, Skull and BonesTM and other yet-to-be-announced premium games, including a large one, as well as promising Free-to-Play titles for some of our biggest brands.

Conference call

Ubisoft will hold a conference call today, Wednesday January 11, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. Paris time/12:30 p.m. New York time. The conference call can be accessed live and via replay by clicking on the following link:

HostColor.com Ends 2022 With 29 Locations For Delivery of Cloud … – Benzinga

HostColor.com (HC), has reported to the technology media that it ends 2022 with 29 Virtual Data Centers used for delivering Cloud infrastructure services. As of December 2022, the company delivers Hosted Private Cloud and Public Cloud Server services based on VMware ESXi, Proxmox VE, and Linux Containers' virtualization technologies, and 10Gbps Dedicated Servers from the following data center locations:

Localization of the Cloud services & More Bandwidth At Lower Costs

HostColor announced in November 2022 its Cloud infrastructure service priorities for 2023 - "Localization of the Cloud services" and "Increased bandwidth rate at fixed monthly cost". The company has also said that one of its major business goals for 2023 is to help SMBs take control of their IT infrastructure in a cloud service market, characterized by increasing cloud lock-in, imposed by Big Tech and the major cloud providers.

SMBs To Take Control Of Their IT Infrastructure?

"There are two simultaneously developing trends in the Cloud service market - a growing pressure on the smaller and medium IT infrastructure providers by the leading hyperscalers (compute clouds), and a growing dependence of Users of cloud services from the same those big major clouds. The Users' dependence comes to a point of de-facto cloud lock-in," says HostColor.com founder and CEO Dimitar Avramov. He adds that the biggest cloud infrastructure providers impose complex contractual and pricing terms and procedures that make transitioning data and services to another vendor's platform difficult and very costly.

"As a result of the hyperscalers' policies the cloud service users are highly dependent (locked-in) on a single corporate cloud platform. When it comes to the structure of the services and billing, the business models of the major technology clouds feature a complete lack of transparency. All this results in significant loss of money for SMBs that vary from a couple of thousands to millions of dollars on annual basis, depending on the cloud services they use." explains HostColor's executive. He adds that his company is determined to raise users' awareness about the cloud lock-in and to help as many business owners as it can, to move out their IT infrastructures from the major hyperscalers to smaller and medium cloud service providers.

Cloud computing experts have been long ringing the bell that the vendor lock-in in the cloud is real.

David Linthicum says in an article published at InfoWorld on July 2, 2021, that "Cloud-native applications have built-in dependencies on their cloud hosts, such as databases, security, governance, ops tools, etc." and that "It's not rocket science to envision the day when a cloud-native application needs to move from one cloud to another. It won't be easy."

In a publication in CIO.com titled "10 dark secrets of the cloud", the author Peter Wayner, warns Cloud Users "You're locked in more than you think" and adds that "Even when your data or the services you create in the cloud are theoretically portable, simply moving all those bits from one company's cloud to another seems to take quite a bit of time." Mr. Wayner also says that Uses of the major hyper-scalers are "paying a premium - even if it's cheap" and that performance of the major clouds "isn't always as advertised".

Internal research conducted by HostColor.com between 2019 - 2022 examines the terms of services, pricing, and the Cloud IaaS models of the five biggest cloud infrastructure providers. The research shows that their cloud service terms and pricing models feature a high level of opacity. This results in significant loss of money for their users that vary from a couple of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars on annual basis, depending on the services they use.

Top Web Hosting and VPS Services Reviewed – Digital Journal

Web hosting refers to the practice of hosting a website on a server so that it can be accessed by users over the internet. There are several types of web hosting options available, including shared hosting, virtual private server (VPS) hosting, and dedicated server hosting.

Shared hosting is the most basic and affordable type of web hosting. It involves sharing a single physical server and its resources with multiple websites. This means that each website shares the same CPU, RAM, and disk space as other websites on the server. Shared hosting is suitable for small websites with low traffic and limited resources.

VPS hosting, on the other hand, provides a more isolated and secure environment for hosting a website. In VPS hosting, a single physical server is divided into multiple virtual servers, each with its own resources and operating system. This allows each website to have its own dedicated resources, making it more performant and scalable than shared hosting. VPS hosting is a good option for websites with moderate traffic and resource requirements.

Dedicated server hosting is the most powerful and expensive type of web hosting. In this type of hosting, a single website is hosted on a physical server that is dedicated solely to it. This means that the website has access to all of the servers resources and is not sharing them with any other websites. Dedicated server hosting is suitable for large websites with high traffic and resource demands.

Cloud hosting is a type of web hosting that involves hosting a website on a network of virtual servers, which are distributed across multiple physical servers. This allows for greater scalability and flexibility, as the resources of the virtual servers can be easily adjusted to meet the changing needs of the website.

One of the main advantages of cloud hosting is its scalability. With traditional web hosting, if a website experiences a sudden increase in traffic, it may run out of resources and become slow or unavailable. With cloud hosting, the website can easily scale up its resources to meet the increased demand. This is done by adding more virtual servers to the network or increasing the resources of existing virtual servers.

Another advantage of cloud hosting is its reliability. With traditional web hosting, if a physical server goes down, the websites hosted on it will also be unavailable. With cloud hosting, the virtual servers are distributed across multiple physical servers, so if one server goes down, the other servers can continue to serve the website, ensuring that it remains available.

Cloud hosting is also generally more flexible than traditional web hosting, as it allows for the creation of custom configurations and the use of multiple operating systems. It also often includes additional features such as load balancing, automated backups, and monitoring.

Overall, cloud hosting is a good option for websites that require high scalability, reliability, and flexibility. Its often used by large websites with high traffic and resource demands, such as e-commerce websites and enterprise applications. However, it can also be a good choice for smaller websites that want to take advantage of the scalability and reliability of the cloud. We also recommend reading cloud hosting as well as WordPress hosting on CaveLions.

Tachyum signed 14 significant MOUs with prestigious universities, research institutes, and innovative companies like the Faculty of Information Technology at Czech Technical University in Prague, Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies, M Computers, Picacity, LuxProvide S.A. (Meluxina supercomputer), Mat Logica, and Cologne Chip. Other agreements are in progress.

Technical Achievements

The launch of Prodigy followed the successful preproduction and Quality Assurance (QA) phases for hardware and software testing on FPGA emulation boards, and achievements in demonstrating Prodigys integration with major platforms to address multiple customer needs. These included FreeBSD, Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux), KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) hypervisor virtualization, and native Docker under the Go programming language (Golang).

Software ecosystem enhancements also included improvements to Prodigys Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) specification-based BIOS (Basic Input Output System) replacement firmware, incorporating the latest versions of the QEMU emulator and GNU Compiler Collection (GCC). These improvements allow quick and seamless integration of data center technologies into Tachyum-based environments.

Tachyum completed the final piece of its core software stack with a Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) running on a Prodigy emulation system. This enables Tachyum to provide OEM/ODM and system integrators with complete software and firmware stack, and serves as a key component of the upcoming Tachyum Prodigy 4 socket reference design.

In its hardware accomplishments, Tachyum built its IEEE-compliant floating-point unit (FPU) from the ground upone of the most advanced in the world, with the highest clock speedsand progressed to running applications in Linux interactive mode on Prodigy FPGA hardware with SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processing) Linux and the FPU. This proved the stability of the system and allowed Tachyum to move forward with additional testing. It completed LINPACK benchmarks using Prodigys FPU on a FPGA. LINPACK measures a systems floating-point computing power by solving a dense system of linear equations to determine performance. It is a widely used benchmark for supercomputers.

The company published three technical white papers that unveiled never-before-disclosed architectural designs of the system-on-chip (SOC) and AI training techniques, revealing how Prodigy addresses trends in AI, enables deep learning workloads that are more environmentally responsible with lower energy consumption and reduced carbon emissions. One paper defined a groundbreaking high-performance, low-latency, low-cost, low-power, highly scalable exascale-flattened networking solution that provides a superior alternative to the more expensive, proprietary and limited scalability InfiniBand communications standard.

Around the world

Tachyum was a highlight of exhibits at Expo 2020 Dubai with the world premiere of the Prodigy Universal Processor for supercomputers, and presented Prodigy at LEAP22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Tachyum was named one of the Most Innovative AI Solutions Providers to watch by Enterprise World. Company executives were among the featured presenters at ISC High Performance 2022 and Supercomputing 2022 events.

Looking forward

With its Series C funding, expected to close in 2023, Tachyum will finance the volume production of Prodigy Universal Processor Chip and be positioned for sustained profitability, as well as increase headcount.

2023 will see the company move to tape-out, silicon samples, production, and shipments. After running LINPACK benchmarks using Prodigys FPU on a FPGA there are only four more steps to go before the final netlist of Prodigy: running UEFI and boot loaders loading Linux on the FPGA, completing vector-based LINPACK testing with I/O, followed by I/O with virtualization, RAS (Reliability, Availability and Serviceability).

Prodigy delivers unprecedented data center performance, power, and economics, reducing CAPEX and OPEX significantly. Because of its utility for both high-performance and line-of-business applications, Prodigy-powered data center servers can seamlessly and dynamically switch between workloads, eliminating the need for expensive dedicated AI hardware and dramatically increasing server utilization. Tachyum's Prodigy integrates 128 high-performance custom-designed 64-bit compute cores, to deliver up to 4x the performance of the highest-performing x86 processors for cloud workloads, up to 3x that of the highest performing GPU for HPC, and 6x for AI applications.
