Riot Games takes back League of Legends and TFT from Garena — finally – ONE Esports

Hey dad, longtime no see.

Riot Games released their premier MOBA game League of Legends in October 2009. Back then, there was only one server located in California, USA.

Players in Southeast Asia had to endure 150 to over 200 ping if they wanted to play LoL until one year later in 2010 when Garena, a Singapore-based game developer and publisher, took over the publishing of League of Legends in the region.

Setting up dedicated servers in most SEA countries, players have enjoyed a low ping environment since 2010. However, technical, player, esports, and infrastructural support from the third-party publisher diminished over time.

More than 12 years later, to the delight of its regional player base, LoL is finally going back into the hands of Riot Games, starting in January 2023. Using the official Riot Games multi-game client, players will be able to access League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, Valorant, and Legends of Runeterra on PC.

At its peak, Garena spearheaded the first-ever LoL esports league in 2012, the Garena Premiere League (GPL), even before the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) existed.

National teams like Singapore Sentinels, Taipei Assassins, ahq eSports Club, Saigon Jokers, GIGABYTE Marines, Kuala Lumpur Hunters, and the Bangkok Titans made a name for themselves in the GPL. In fact, that very year in 2012, Taipei Assassins did the region proud by winning the second LoL world championship.

TSMs 2022 head coach, Singaporean Wong Chawy Xing Lei, built his pro career in the GPL before moving to the League of Legends Master Series (LMS), which was established in 2015. With ahq, he got the chance to compete at Worlds 2017 before retiring to become a full-time coach.

In 2018, Vietnam established its own league, the Vietnam Championship Series. It was awarded Wildcard Region status with a more direct path to Worlds. In 2019, LMS and the League of Legends SEA Tour (LST) merged to form the Pacific Championship Series (PCS).

The return of these two titles also means that Riot Games will take charge of its corresponding esports leagues. Players can expect more community events, collegiate tournaments, and offline campaigns. For the VCS, they not only will regain ownership and operations, but will also be spearheading its production and marketing efforts, Alex Kraynov, Managing Director for APAC, Riot Games, told ONE esports.

We are grateful for Garenas partnership and publishing support over the past decade. Their efforts have built an incredible community of League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics players across Southeast Asia, and the games success would have been impossible without them, said Alex.

Over the past few years, Riot has also worked hard to expand our capabilities across the region, building strong local teams and a deep network of partners. We now feel that this is the right time for us to own the publishing of League and TFT in Southeast Asia, as part of our expansion into Asia Pacific.

For Taiwan and Vietnam specifically, Riot Games told ONE Esports in an exclusive interview that in order to comply with local regulations, it has appointed Taiwan Mobile and VNGGames as the new publishers of League of Legends and TFT in these two countries.

As part of the move, Riot will launch its own League of Legends and TFT servers, and the existing Garena servers will cease operations by January 2023. All players who wish to keep their accounts and their data will need to link them to a Riot ID.

The Return of NaNoWriMo and Why You Should Participate! The Lamron – Lamron

Have you ever thought to yourself, Wow, I really want to start writing more, but I havent been given that push to kickstart that process; or, maybe you just want to keep track of the continual progress youre making within your own work? Well, look no further for a solution to your ponderings! This month both the English Department and the Creative Writing Club have decided to participate in National Novel Writing Month. You are in no way mandated to write a novel this month; we have extended it to be somewhat flexible, allowing you to write a novella, a briefer work. However, this does not require you to complete a piece, but rather acts as an intensification to get some ground covered!

This is a month dedicated to trying to push yourself to write, whether continuing your own novel or starting a new work altogether, with the intention of trying to have aspiring writers fulfill their personal writing goals. Though we have a set word count we wish to reach, currently set at 200,000 words spread out between several writers, this is subject to change as more people decide to partake! As of now, theres a standard goal per participant of completing 50,000 words this month, though you can easily change your plan.

Now you may wonder, How am I supposed to be keeping track of how many words Ive written so far? This is where the English Departments discord server comes in, utilizing a Writer Bot to keep track of each participants goals and daily progress towards achieving them. This bot is an easy-to-use tool, providing various features meant to help writers, obviously, keep track of their goals and progress, as well as generate prompts, flip a coin, and give motivational quotes when youre feeling down in the dumps. NaNoWriMo is a good chance to get myself out of my writing comfort zone and work on just one project for an extended period of time. Its frustrating, but it can also be a lot of fun, especially when you have other people doing it with you, said one English student.

Another thought back to their previous experience with NaNoWriMo and expressed high hopes for the month ahead: I failed to reach the 50k goal my first time a few years ago, so participating this year for the second time has been exactly what I expected, except I feel more confident with it. It feels as overwhelming as it does productive. Ive been applying the common advice I hear from other successful writers who make it a habit to write on a regular morning schedule just as soon as they wake up.

The Essex seaside resort that’s ‘completely empty’ off season in winter – Essex Live

Clacton on Sea is completely different from its often crowded self when it goes into winter. According to MyLondon reporter Lea, the only thing she heard towards the promenade's chip shop is the sea violently pounding the coast as opposed to the crowds of sunbathers, seagulls stealing chips, and children begging for ice cream.

Clacton is an option for many people who want to trade the everyday hustle and bustle for the beach. It has a pier, a tonne of fish and chip shops, and all the arcades that can entertain visitors to their heart's content.

However, a typically booming tourism sector has once again come to a standstill in November. Candy Corner, a candy store fortunate enough to occupy the prime space at the pier's entrance, has not done a lot of business lately.

"Some days are worse than others," its dejected employee says. "On a rainy day like today, Ive had 13 customers. On a good summer day, I get more than 100."

Things were grimmer across the road at Ice Cream and Chips at the Pavilion as Lea went to check out the venue opposite the Candy Corner. "We do get a lot less people," the server admitted with a forlorn shrug.

"Today Ive had two, and Ive been open since 10 am. So yeah, a lot less." As the server gently sank back down onto her chair, Lea wished she hadn't eaten lunch just so she could buy something.

The server's disappointment followed Lea as she strolled along the beach. The whole town was riddled with a certain portentous silence that sat like a blanket upon her shoulders as she attempted to find another open shop.

Lea had little luck, and was soon approached by an equally bewildered tourist. While she was looking for answers on Clacton's dormant period, he was simply looking for some food.

"I fancied going to the seaside and one of the closest to me is Clacton," he said. "Ive been during the season and it was full of people and everything was open. I was expecting at least something to be open.

"But when I got here I realised everything is closed. Theres not much to do and its actually very sad how sad it looks in the off-season. There were no other tourists, the beach was empty, and there were only two shops open. I couldnt even get fish and chips.

"The upside of visiting Clacton in the off-season is the gorgeous beaches are empty and if youre driving there are no parking problems. For someone who just wants to enjoy the sea, its the perfect time to visit.

"But if youre visiting with kids or family, I wouldnt recommend it - it looks dodgy and everything is closed." Lea said his judgment of Clacton as 'dodgy' is perhaps unfair, but not unfounded.

Neighbouring Jaywick has often been named England's most deprived area and Lea thinks its off-season feel might partly explain why the area gets a bad rep. According to Lea, while Clacton-on-Sea is the place to be in summer, closed shops, shuttered restaurants and bars, and empty beaches make up the town's winter tapestry, and an overarching feeling of waiting for better days lingers.

‘NZ has put women’s rugby on the map’ – Black Ferns thank fans – 1News

The Black Ferns have thanked fans for their overwhelming support during this year's triumphant Rugby World Cup campaign on home soil at a function in downtown Auckland this afternoon.

The world champions, some wearing shades after celebrating last night's 34-31 win over England in the final at a packed Eden Park, came out to the roar of dedicated fans from New Zealand and abroad who wanted to congratulate the side again for their historic sixth title.

Co-captain Kennedy Simon led the festivities, thanking fans again for their energy.

"Your support was incredible for us this campaign," Simon said.

"It's been an incredible eight weeks but it was made all the better by you."

Simon also spoke of the legacy of the black jersey and paid tribute to all those who had warn it before them.

"We wouldn't be here without the women who have paved the way for us," she said.

"I think it's safe to say that New Zealand has put women's rugby on the map."

Departing coach Wayne Smith was up next, showing the fun side he had developed in his short stint with the team with a "moondance" before giving a more serious farewell and thanks to all those involved in he campaign.

"I couldn't be more proud of this team," Smith said.

"It's been six or seven months but I've got to know them - they've taught me how to dance, how to sing, how to cry, how to laugh on match day.

"They've changed my life and while I'm finishing up, I'm going to be following them for the rest of their careers."

Smith then turned his attention to the crowd to thank them as well for getting on board with his charge to the World Cup.

"They said we couldn't do it. They said we couldn't fill a stadium. They said that we couldn't get crowds like this.

"But all we set about doing was trying to be true to your DNA, our Kiwi DNA and have the ability to reinvent ourselves and be encouraged to have a crack at stuff."

The final speech was given to retiring great Kendra Cocksedge who stood with fellow retiring Black Fern Renee Wickliffe.

"We can't thank New Zealand enough for getting behind this team, we just love that everyone has fallen in love with the Black Ferns," the halfback said.

"For us to end our careers winning a World Cup on home turf, there's no better way we could have done it.

"We love this team. Keep supporting them."

With the speeches out the way, the team slowly made their way down from the stage to mingle with fans and sign gear, continuing the party that started on the final hooter last night.
